I have come by some plexiglass acrylic 1" thick and was wondering if anyone has experimented with this type of material? How would it compare with bakelite? I am thinking of making a lap steel from it. _________________ LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN GEORGIA |

There have been several guitars made from it and they have some interesting qualities. I am a big fan of the Ampeg version, Fender made a Strat like that and BC Rich was making a Warlock out of it. It isn't particularly toneful, but has an interesting sound. I'd love to see a lap steel made of it, just for a different sound. You'd have to be real selective about the pickup. |

Mike Cort had one of these for sale a couple of years ago on eBay.
I think these are gorgeous.

You are correct, Bill. I think the acrylic is not as strong... I'd try it anyway though... |

One problem you might encounter is what would happen if the steel was exposed to heat while you were playing it (ie under bright stage lights.) I remember reading in Jerry Byrd's autobiography that he had a tough time keeping his bakalite Rick in tune during performances when it was exposed to hot climates. I also had a friend that built a Strat neck out of Lucite. He finally scrapped the idea for the same reason. |

The Jeweltone has a layer of aluminum sandwiched in between the layers of acrylic. That would stabilize the guitar I think. You could attach a layer of aluminum to the bottom of your 1" slab.
