Hello fellow steelers -
I've recently moved from Colorado to North County San Diego, with instruments and voice in tow, now looking for music buddies in North County SD area. Building on decades of standard-tuning guitar playing, I now play dobro (2 yrs. into it), electric lap steel, and Hawaiian slack key guitar (3 yrs. into it.) Still playing a little std. tuning guitar for vocals, and to figure out tunes.
I'm wanting to connect in with steelers or those interested in playing with a dobro/ slack key/lap steel 'stylist'. I like variety; progressive, fun stuff. I like a solid groove; good songs; group improv. I've got some slackkey-inspired original instrumentals that sound great with electric lap or PSG.(can I say that in this group?)
Current fave albums/artists are Slider by Bruce Kaphan; In the Dark by the Vanduras; Rob Ickes; Allison Krauss with Jerry D., The Great Dobro Sessions, etc. etc.
I look foward to joining the conversation with you all. Happy New Year 2006!
Thanks much,
DP Waldman

Welcome to the forum, DP.
I grew up in San Diego and spent a lot of time in the North County beach towns during my misspent youth (i.e., I was a surfer). I'd like to retire along that stretch of the Pacific -- now I just need to figure out a way to spin lint into gold.
There are a few forumites from around San Diego county; hopefully you'll make a connection here. And make sure to watch the performance schedule at the Belly Up in Solana Beach -- David Lindley plays there frequently. |

Welcome to the Forum!
We have several frequent contributors to this group from the San Diego area and glad to have another. I'm sure they'll say howdy and you'll be seeing and hearing more from them soon.
Aloha from about 8 hours north of you,

HI Craig,
That would be Shelter Island. The two seaplane hangers are in the background. I live in Point Loma and have this view out my front windows.
Lets have a San Diego Steel get-together.

Hey everybody -
Thank you so much for the welcome. After 19 years in Colorado, it really feels good to be back in California (I grew up in West L.A. but have spent much time up and down the coast, whether living, working, or in school). Including Santa Cruz! (thanks, Bill!). My adulthood may have been more misspent than my youth, Russ, so I'm back for more of that, including surfing - in the water again after too many years but having more fun with it than ever). And there's something about steel guitar and the ocean that so goes together, eh? Thanks again, you guys. Yes, let's have some kind of gathering of the San Diego steelers.
Cheers,
DP |

Hey DP. You really have to make a point of going to visit Jim at his Steel shop. I still can't beleive that we have a steel git shop here. Jim is super and a great resource.
I would enjoy meeting you. That proposed get together down in SD is looking interesting.

Hey DP, I grew up in West L.A. too. Went to Hamilton High, ate burgers at the Apple Pan, took the #9 Pico bus to the beach, surfed Santa Monica etc etc... |
