Brad and others,

I got my Mesa pre and it sounds great. A little to bright and "glassy" on the high end. What would be good tubes to try, even if expensive (NOS) I figure they last a lifetime so I'd rather spend more if it makes a big difference.

thx

Bob,

try replacing the 250p ceramic treble cap with a 250p silver mica type. Also if there are any other ceramic caps in the path, make those film or silver micas as well. Tubes may not fix it.

Thanks, Brad

Guess I'll have to hunt down a schematic Smile

I found a few Sylvania, RCA, GE,Siemens and Ruby tubes that I had stashed.

What is a 6201 and an ECC81?

Do preamp tubes have a huge impact on tone or minor?

thx

I put a NOS Sylvania in what I think is V1. The cir. board is not marked so I assumed V1 is on the left looking at the front of the unit.

Anyone know the Studio pre tube layout?

thx

Those are other names for a 12AT7. Tubes make a difference for sure, but sometimes the warmest tube in the world can't overcome the crispy edge of ceramic cap's.

Thanks, Brad

What does V2 do? I *think* I changed out V1 (far left looking at front" but it wasn't marked on the board.

So what do the ceramic caps look like and can I tell where they are on the board by the schematic?

thx
