Of course how it sounds is subjective....but here is an example.

I played a buddy's-it had the factory strings on it that were horrible-maybe it would sound better with quality strings.

Gene's clip once again proves that it's "in the hands." A fine player like Gene can make a cheap instrument sound good.

Of course if you could do a side-by-side comparison of Gene playing the same piece on a classic Rick or Fender, then how would it sound?

It's sort of difficult without a reference point for comparison.

Gene, thats very inspirational playing. Could you please shed some light on how you did the back up instruments and also if that was your own arrangment on the steel and also the tuning you used (C6 ?). Man, you should put a book out, it sounds perfect. Thanks... Got any CD's of that style of you on 6 string steel for sell?

I sat in on one of those things once and was shocked how fat it sounded. It may have helped the ths back line guy had brought a $3500 botique amp to play through.

I bought an artisan a few years ago when I started playing steel again. I was surprised at how good it sounded for an instrument that cost so little. I notice the price has even gotten cheaper. However, I have to admit mine never sounded as good as the one Gene was playing. I wonder why. Jack

My Lap Steel Class at Berklee started out with everyone using their "spare" guitar and putting a nut raiser on it. Since the Artisan has come out, everybody buys one. Last semester I had 8 guys in the class and they all had one.
They sound pretty good and after the kids all get the bug, they'll probably invest in a better axe. It's an excellent starter steel or second steel for experimenting.
