I would welcome your comments and advice on delay stomp boxes.
What is the difference(in sound)between the two types.
What is a good recommendation ie Brand name which is reasonably priced.
Many thanks
Billy

I like the elextro harmonix deluxe memory man with the vibrato all the way down. That pedal is lush! I was playing with a line6 dl4, but it seemed to thin my sound, and to me most digital delays do that. I have heard really good things about the boss/roland space echo pedal that just came out, its supposed to emulate the old tape echo unit well. In a pinch I use a little dan elctro danecho pedal that doesnt seem to thin me out to much.

I think it depends on the application. A whole bunch of us use the Boss DD-3 digital for steel, me included. Digital gives a clean decay sound, which we like as a general rule to go with our clean sound. For 6-string I use a Danelectro PB&J, which is actually digital but simulates analog. Great little pedal. Guitar players usually like the little bit of distortion you get with an analog delay. They try to replicate the old tape delays. Ibanez AD9 is a popular true analog pedal. Hope that helps.

Hey, Brian. I'm at work, so I don't know my exact settings. Basically, from left to right knobs, blend at 11:00, repeats at a hair over 1, delay time at...oh hell, I can't remember. I'll get back to you when I get home, but, you should hook up guitar, volume pedal, then delay, to amp. Now that I took a second look, I see you're setting it up right, just listed them backwards from what I said.

I used to use a Boss DD-5 digital delay. When I went to a POD XT, I settled on the digital delay in the POD XT after trying all the delay types it had built in.

Ok, Brian here's my settings, left to right: E. level at 10:00, Feedback just a hair off of minimum, D time at 11:00, Mode at M.200 ms. Start there and tweak to taste. Those settings have worked for me for about 20 years.

I found that the Boss DM-2 anolog has a smoother slap back than the DD-5 I use for steel.
I like the digital response of the DD-5 over the DM-2 for steel but not for electric guitar.
I have a Pod-XT but never found anything I like in its settings for live playing although I do use it for recordings.

Hey, Michael, I've just tried out your settings on the DD3 and am most impressed. No nasty repeats or cloying sounds. The difference in sound when switching the pedal on and off is so subtle, yet, perfect.I would never of thought of using 200ms, how did you figure out those settings? The repeat button seems to make no difference when moved to say, 12 o clock, is this normal? Also, How much reverb do you use? I can't see me going back to 800ms which I think most steelies use. I can't wait for the gig this weekend to crank up the volume and hear what it's like in a large hall, I'll let you know, Thanks for the information.

Well, James, I think the key word is "subtle." I've never liked a lot of delay in either 6-string or steel, just enough to fatten it up a bit without noticing that there's a lot of delay in there. My reverb is usually between 3-4 on the NV112.
