George Van Eps guitar on eBay.
This one sure caught my eye. What can you tell me about it?

Well George was both an amazing jazz guitarist (I'm listening to his "Hand Crafted Swing" CD right now - a beautiful album)and pioneered the 7 String guitar so that he could provide the bass line. He put out some amazing records the 60's and then not again until the 90's when he himself was in his 80's. He worked behind the scenes in LA. A Guitarist's guitarist, George wrote a 3 volume definitive instructional book on playing jazz harmony on the Guitar. I'm actually working through volume one right now and applying what he has done to the pedal steel. Imagine an even more detailed Joe Wright and you get the idea of the type of instruction George put out.
$40k for this guitar? Not unreasonable. There are many students, fans, and admirers (I'm one of them) who would kill to have this guitar. This is a true bit of Jazz history. |

Well, I was gonna bid on it, but it just sets wrong with me that for that kind of money he won't throw in the shipping costs for free. Wouldn'tcha think? |

Wonder how much he paid the family for it? Wonder how much of his 90% profit he will share with them? |

I would pay $60K for George's 1930's Epiphone Deluxe 7-string (a 6-string converted to a 7-string by Epi himself), but I doubt that would be for sale.
George is my favorite acoustic archtop guitarist--but I don't care much for the recordings he made on this particular auction piece. His work in the 30s and late 40s is incredible. |

Since this isn't a lap steel, it's moved to Music from No Peddlers.
