Just watched (on DVD) the Shania Twain TV special with Alison Krauss and Union Station. I love Shania and her songs anyway, and thought the band did a great job on turning her songs into 'unplugged' versions -great playing from everyone and fabulous harmonies. But Jerry's dobro sound was a little 'electric' sounding, and sometimes used a little delay. Maybe it was a deliberate attempt to sound more like the steel on the original Shania records, rather than the traditional acoustic dobro tone? Or was it a particularly 'metallic' sounding instrument or pickup? Thoughts?

Jerry sometimes can be into more effects than my 18 year old guitarist son. On his website on the bulletin board he listed all the gadgets used on his new cd, "The Best Kept Secret." That cd is about 60% dobro, and 40% lap steel. I don't think it was the pickup or the guitar, I think he deliberately used some effects to give it a more electric sound, instead of going strictly for a truly "unplugged" sound for the Shania show. As a regular on his bulletin board, I don't recall seeing him post anything about why he went for that sound with Shania, so it's pure speculation on my part what the maestro's reasoning was.

Was this the Shania special from a year or two ago? Or is this something new that I missed?

For me, I'm such a Jerry fan that he can do whatever he wants I'll watch!

On the Allison Krauss CMT special you can see a bank of pedals at his feet. I think it is great! I would like to know what they are.

Jerry could play the dobro through a milk carton and it would sound good. I am sure he is experimenting all of the time just like us. At his level he must keep it fresh or else he will stop.

Craig-it's that same special with Shania that you are thinking of-nothing new.
