Once again it is time for the California Western Swing Society's "Hall Of Fame Music Celebration"! This year there will be 16 bands coming to perform from the western states area. Music starts each morning at 9:00 and goes until 1:30am!!! Thursday the events kick off at 5:00pm, and there is no cover (Sacramento's great Hubert "Brownie" Brown will be playing his smooth and unique D9th/G6th 10 string universal Sho~Bud to start the show... if you have never heard Brownie before, it is a must!). Cover for all other days is $10.
I will be sitting in with my friends The Stardust Cowboys on Fri., Sat., and Sunday. Last year back stage looked like Bobbe Seymore's PSG store, packed with Mullens, Carters, Emmons and Buds.... ahhhhhhh, so nice ... and the pickers who brought these fine guitars were absolutely tops!!!
To find the Machinist's Hall in Rancho Cordova, take US Highway 50 to Sunrise Blvd. South. Make a left on Citrus 1/2 block past the 2nd stop light. There is an Enterprise Car rental near the turn.
Here is a list of bands and times:
http://www.westernswingsociety.org/
Food and Beverages (including a full cocktail bar) will be served at the festival... and last year the food was killer too....
oh yeah, DO bring your dancing shoes!
See ya there! _________________ Dave Wren

Thanks for the bump Mike.
Sunday is the day the new inductees for the Western Swing Hall of fame, and this year is very exciting for us, as our long time friend, Stardust Cowboy fiddle great Ronnie Elkan is being inducted. No pedals, but he still plays pretty good
See ya'll there. _________________ Dave Wren

Hi Joe. The Western Swing Society in Sacramento hosts a western swing concert/dance each month, on the first sunday of the month... if that helps.
Drop me an email when you're closer to your trip and I'll see who's playing where for that time in June. _________________ Dave Wren

Sounds like fun. Maybe someday our swing band can make it out there for your event. We are currently making plans to be in Sacramento next Memorial day weekend. |

Hey Roger, that must be the annual Jazz Jubilee in Sac. We played it this year with Don Burnham and his Lost Weekend Band (Bobby Black on steel!)... it was a blast, and the folks loved it... which is good because they haven't always included Western Swing in the "jazz" jubilee
Look forward to meeting you then.
Boy, what a great night for steel last night was... C6th master, Chuck Hayes, from Musgogee, OK is back this year, with his great sounding PedalMaster D10... and as a unexpected treat, Billy Easton from Phoenix dropped in and jammed with folks.... another C6th master to be sure, with a golden throated D10 Sho~Bud.
Fellow Forumite Billy Wilson will be coming on in to play his Tom-Bradshaw-restored MSA D12 (fire engine red!), as well as long time Sacramento steel great Jim Gray, with his brand-spanking-new MSA D10. Now if only Dean Rankin from Seattle shows up today, my week is complete.
Well, time to change clothes, jump in the Pickup and off to another day in steel heaven
See ya there. _________________ Dave Wren

David,
I've got a show in Marysville around noon so I might try to come by either before or after. I might have my two young kids with me. Do you know if kids are allowed?
Dave Zirbel and Henry Nagel will be playing the Marysville show with me so maybe I can get them to show up too.

Steve, my wife brought our 3 year old grand daughter yesterday and she had a good time dancing, like everyone else Please do stop by. Remember there's a jam every night, so bring yur stuff.
Next week I'm going to sleep, but there's still two more days of swinging fun. I'll post a complete list of all the great steelers who have shown up this year. _________________ Dave Wren

My first trip ever to Sacramento, and what a great time I had!! I had the pleasure of working with the Tommy Thomsen band and meeting lots of new friends and seeing some great old friends as well. It was especially good to see David Wren, Jerry E. on keyboard and Rudy Osborn on bass. And to finally meet Brownie, Jay Riley and Bob Hayes too. I got to work with Buddy Ferguson from Texas on lead guitar. I met up with old friends Randy and Ken Bedes...I have them to thank for even knowing about this event. Randy is a great drummer and his brother Ken chimed in on electric mandolin (ala Tiny Moore) I had a wonderful time, and thanks to all the Western Swing Society folks for making me feel at home. I hope to be there every year from now on out!!

Well, first let me say I really slept in late this morning
What a great 4 days this has been for PSG.... and Yes Kenny, they still have your picture, but now all the pix are shown one at a time projected from a computer, kind of nice, but I miss the wall of memories myself.... many of your old time buddies say "Hi"!... including myself... miss your smooth playing.
One nice thing about an event that lasts four days like this, is I really got a lot of time to talk steel with all these absolutley top notch players... my brain feels a little swollen today, but that is a good thing
I want to say hi to my new steel friend, fellow forumite Joe Freeman, from Carson City, NV, and thank you and your lovely wife for the kindness (and cold beers ). We'll have to get together with your Sierra S12 soon.... and it was so nice to see Ken Bedes again (nice score on that single neck Fender String Master ... in mint condition!)
Here's my list of PSG pickers who performed (and were so kind in sharing tips on great steel picking!):
Bob Meeks from San Diego, CA - new-to-him '95 Emmons D10, and a couple of killer Scorpion 12" speaker enclosures!
Dean Rankin from Seattle, brand new (first gig) Zum D10, and the absolutley amazing Acoustic Image teenny-tiny amp, which stuffed the hall with full, full PSG music! Dean is a killer player on both necks, in one of the best swing bands I've ever heard live. If you get a chance to hear "Keith Holter and the Longhorns", don't miss them!
Jim Grey from Sacramento, CA - brand-new MSA D10... weighs less than my S12 , and what an amazing product of design and machining... killer sound too.
I've already mentioned Jay Riley and my old friend Brownie, but I need one more time to thank them for taking me under thier wing, and being so kind with thier tips. I also need to mention that Jay's S10 Mullen is a C6th tuning.... this guy's not kidding around when it comes to PSG jazz... what a great resource to players in N. CA.
Thank goodness Billy Easton got wind of our swing festival, and brought his sweet-sweet Sho~Bud D10, folks, if you are passing through AZ, be sure to see if this guy is playing anywhere.... tone to die for! ... and what a C6th picker! (super nice guy too!)
and Last, but not least Mr. Chuck Hayes from Musogogee, OK... they may not smoke marijuan in Musogogee, but they sure as hell grow some great steel guitarists! This was my second time to hear Chuck's exciting and expressive C6th pickin on his beautiful (and great sounding) PedalMaster D10. I spent his entire sets sitting back stage, listening to his playing... nothing less than inspirational! Thanks for coming such a long way Chuck!
Billy Wilson, we sorely missed you this year, we'll look forward to seeing you next year.... and hopefully some of the the other great N.CA pickers I know are out there (are you reading this Mr. Zirble ). After Billy Easton had to fly home, I took your place backing up Tommy Thomsen's band, and it was a real thrill to be on stage with all those folks who have been playing swing music for all these years! BTW b0b, Tommy says "Hi".
Oh Boy, guess I've typed enuff on this post, but I'm telling you all, this was the best gathering of swing musicians I've been to so far (of course I have only attended the yearly gatherings in Sac.... I think more travel is in my future ).
Thanks again to all the great pickers who donated thier time and music, made my week fur sure! _________________ Dave Wren
