not being familiar with Mac. how do you tell a new computer from an older version ? i know it sounds like a simple question but for those of us that don't keep up with such things, we could easly buy an out dated machine

OSX (operating system ten) was released in 2000, superseding OS9. The latest version of OSX is nicknamed Leopard, the previous one was Tiger. Earlier versions of OSX were Cheetah, Puma, Panther and Jaguar. If you want a newer Mac, don't buy anything but one that has Tiger or Leopard, whether it's a desktop or a laptop.

For any version of OSX, click on the Apple in the upper left of the screen.

Select "About This Mac" from the drop down menu.
Click on "More Info" .

It's all there.

Apple always has the most current computers for sale on their web site.

If you're looking to buy an older Macintosh and aren't sure what you're getting, I'd recommend http://www.lowendmac.com for details, suggested pricing, etc.
