Hey Guys and Gals,
I was asked yesterday by my Pastor to present a 3-4 min. childrens message this Sunday around music and the Steel Guitar, which I will, of course, be playing in the Sunday Service.
I can certainly cite Psalms 33, and can talk about the gift of music in general. I'll be speaking to a group of around 20 kids, aged 5 to 12. I'd really like to give them a meaningful message, and maybe introduce them to the wonderful world of Steel Guitar and music.
Any ideas would be welcome!

A suggestion, read this it's short, sweet and to the point,
Psalms 100:1-5 then you can teach them, or point out that we are to praise and worship GOD.
What better way to introduce them to the Steel Guitar. You can share with them,
that you use the talents that GOD gave you and your steel guitar to praise and worship GOD.
And by the way like the old hymn "When we all get to heaven," that's one of the things we will be doing, Worshipping and Praising GOD.
Hope this helps!
May GOD bless you!

Hi Terry,
Great suggestion! Thanks.
Here is what I have planned to read. I had already picked 33 and 150, but upon your suggestion, I have added 100 as well.
I am glad to be able to present a Biblical message to these kids and promote Steel Guitar at the same time.
I hope that I can do a good job of it.
Again, thanks for your input.
Psalm 33
1 Sing joyfully to the LORD, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise him.
2 Praise the LORD with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.
3 Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy.
Psalm 150
1 Praise the LORD.Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens.
2 Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness.
3 Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre,
4 Praise him with tambourine and dancing, praise him with the strings and flute,
5 Praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals.
6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD.
Psalm 100
A psalm. For giving thanks.
1 Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.
2 Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. _________________ David Collins

Every old gospel song is a 3 minute sermon unto itself.
I would suggest playing "What a Friend We Have In Jesus" and "Jesus Loves Me". These are supposedly children's songs but they have a great message even for the adults. I played last Saturday afternoon for an old church open house and I recited the lyrics for a lot of the songs before I played them. It was appreciated. |

In case you guys are wondering,
I read the above Scripture, talked a little about the gift of music, pointing out the gifts of the Organist, Pianist, Choir, etc. Then talked for a few seconds about the Lyre and other stringed instruments, pointed out the ten strings on each neck of my D10 PP, and played "Jesus Loves Me"
The kids were glued, bright eyed, and appeared to be genuinely interested.
What a blessing!
Thanks for the help, and be sure to let me know if I can ever return the favor. _________________ David Collins

Congrats David. I am fortunate to be in a church that stills plays "southern gospel" so my pedal steel gets to be put to good use. My favorite passage in the Bible is Psalms 33:3, but I like the KJV better: play skillfully with a loud noise. That I can do. At least the loud part. Glad you've sparked an interest in the youngsters. I have played guitar and some other instruments since I was a kid but I just started playing the steel a little over a year ago. I absolutely love it. _________________ 09'Rittenberry SD10 (3&5),Thomas D-10 (8&4), Sarno Preamp, BJS bars, Hilton Volume Pedals, Boulet Boots, Walker Seats. |

Hi Bryan,
I play every 1st Sunday, during Communion, and usually at least once more each month for the 11:00 Service at my home Church, and I play every Thursday evening at an outdoor service for another local Church.
It is truly a blessing to me to be able to spread the word through music. I'm glad to know others who get the same enjoyment.
Like you, I've got the "loudly" down pretty well, still working on the "skillfully" part too
