As a few here may remember, I purchased a Mullen from forum member Dale Dorsey back in Feb of this year. I was looking hard for a lacquer Mullen and finally found the one. In transit, FedEx did their best to destroy the guitar by dropping her on the end plate which sent a crack between the necks. I was fortunate enough to be blessed with a fantastic claims representative and the process was somewhat painless albeit the time factors.
The guitar was sent to Mullen by FedEx for an estimate and Del and Mike came up with a very nice figure which was accepted by FedEx. Fast forward several months and here she is. I am actually sharing her prior to her arrival which will be Monday. YEAH!
I special ordered the wood from a fine company called "Bell Forest Products" and spoke to Boone. The wood you see was hand picked by Boone and I hear he is getting hold of Del to see about future business.
I would like to express my most sincere and heartfelt thanks to Mike Mantey, Shaun Mantey and Del Mullen for all the hard work and demonstrating their true labor of love for The Pedal Steel Guitar. Thanks Mullen! I now feel like a little boy awaiting Christmas morn!

Those were designed and built by Elmer Hobor who sadly passed away this last April. I spoke once with Elmer on the phone and he was a gentleman and a scholar for sure. Even with the damage when the guitar arrived, I plugged it in just to hear the PU's and have to say that they were full of sustain and the timbre was beyond anything I had heard before. Elmer only made PU's for a chosen few and I was lucky enough to buy the guitar with them installed. Elmer was in the process of building me a set (with the help of Dale Dorsey) for my Franklin when he passed away. Elmer was known for working with Leo Fender and many greats I can't name. A true loss for sure.

Thats one purdy guitar!!!! I bought my D-10 new in 1992 from Del and Dixie. I still use it today as my main axe. A few years ago the changer fingers were getting pretty worn so I opted to have the newer black fingers installed. I originally was going to pull the changers myself and ship them to Del. Instead I sent the whole guitar, had the changers replaced, one knee lever added plus the 100 thousand mile tune up. All of this done in a quick turnaround time. That poor guitar has been frozen, in tropical thunderstorms, dropped off the band trailer, and never given me one bit of trouble. The folks at Mullen Guitars know craftmanship and quality. The guitar is 15 years old and proudly occupies the stage almost every nite at Renfro Valley. An occasional ZB thrown in and my Mullen SD-11 round out the stable.
You got one to keep there, a real beauty, and I'll bet it plays like a dream!!!

Today is Monday and this has been the toughest weekend I can remember in recent past. My move from Modesto to Pine Grove last weekend wasn't as bad as this weekend for the stress factor! I will chime in and let you great folks know how nice she sounds and plays. By the looks of her, I don't think it takes much of my imagination. Thank you again for all the great comments. |
