I'm building some very low tech lap steels and in looking for a cheap pickup for an 8 string model I was thinking that a Fender P Bass pickup has 8 polepieces...hmmm.....??
Anybody ever use one on an 8 string guitar? I see the Squire series and other P bass pickups for cheap on Ebay a lot. |

My memory may serve me wrong, but I believe I have seen homemade/modified 8-string lap steels with P Bass pickups on eBay.

I tried it and it worked but the volume output was very low compared to guitar pickups. I guess the mass of the bass strings induce more current then the wimpy guitar ones?

Bill- Have you thought about using a seven string Humbucker set at an angle?
If I'm not mistaken you can cover all eight strings and the overstocks seem to be hitting the market for reasonable price.

Mark. I did not think about the seven string at an angle, but I did think of two cheap Strat PUs angled side by side and shifted enough to cover 8. Thanks for the tip. |

Bill,
There are 2 vintage Fender 8 string pickups on eBay right now. #7371842324
Using bass pickups or incorrectly staggered 6 string pickups is not likely to get good results. There are 8 string pickups out there - vintage and new. If you want a balanced tone, it's a good idea to use the correct pickup.

Blade-type 5 and 6-string bass pickups would be better, some are active, some passive. I've looked a freq response specs and they look feasible.
BTW the Instruments for Sale forum always has used PUPz cheap. |

Bill-- I've got a 7-string lap steel with a blade-style 6-string bass Bartolini pickup.
Sounds full and clear.
Its string spacing is a straight 3/8", so the measurement between the outer strings is slightly over 2.5". The Bartolini is about 3 7/8" wide...looks like it could easily accomodate 8 strings.
