For speakers; did the Session 400 ever come from the factory with 2x12's or only 1x15? Thanks |

In the mid 70's, when the Session 400 was first built, you had the option of a 15" JBL or 2X12 Electro Voice SRO's. I bought a new SS-400 in '76 with the EV's. A year or so later, I sent it back to the factory for a 15" speaker and it shipped back with a 15" grey JBL built for Peavey. |

Robert,
Thanks for that information. Recently, I came across a Session 400 that has 2 - 12 inch EV's. I haven't seen the amp yet but I had never heard of Session's with 2x12's. I understand from the owner the EV's are blown and may blow the speakers often. Makes me wonder if the speakers ( The 2x12 EV's ) are a good match for the Session 400 or if somethiing else is an issue?
I would guess the 2x12 set up is the "Fender Twin factor" to pull guys away from the Twin at the time?
Thanks again, |

A guitar player playing a six stringer may have converted it.If you can pop you an ol 15" JBL 4 0hmer in there, you will have a real keeper. Finding one may be dificult. But every now and then one comes up for sale on the forum. There are some fine reconers out there if it needs reconed.
I have been usesing the session 400 this year and
it has a wonderful tone. |

Martin, You could put 12's in this amp as long as the ohms = 4 ohms. I wouldn't recone the EV's. They weighed too much. They made the amp top heavy and I broke the handle lifting the amp. Two JBL's would sure sound good. |

A shorted output transistor in the amp will blow any speaker you put in there! (It only takes a few seconds.)
Always check the amp out (or have a tech check it out), before you replace "blown speakers". |

I ordered my first steel guitar amp, a Session 400, with 2 EV SRO 12 inch speakers. I thought it sounded better than the 15 inch JBL. It certainly could play louder than the JBL. I never blew a speaker but the amp had occasional problems.
Later I had a herniated disk in my spine. |

I remember seeing Big E play thru a pair of Session 400's, one was a JBL 15 and the other a 2 x 12 w/ only one speaker..after he tuned he moved a blanket in the 2x12 cabinet to get an even better sound.. it worked.
I also wrote down all his amp settings.. as if that would help . _________________ Bo Borland

I purchased the Session 400 from the original owner over the weekend.
I took it to my local amp tech and he gave it a clean bill of health. The 2x12 EV's are being reconed - we think the speakers were blown because the speaker paper was very brittle either from age or because of the dry Arizona heat not because of the amp.
I cleaned the cabinet of dust and it came out looking really good considering its age - dare I say a slight down grade from excellent condition. I will get the reconed speakers next week and once installed, will try to take some pictures and post them for anyone who has not seen an early Session 400 with the 2x12 set up and metal face plate. This is the first one I've ever seen. |
