For a single neck 8 string I would suggest a high C6 (from high to low) G-E-C-A-G-E-C-A. I think you'll find yourself doing most of your playing on the middle six strings in this case. But I have found this to be the most versatile arrangement. With this tuning you'll be able to move to other styles more quickly and easily if and when you tire of always playing honky tonk music. The other two possibilities that are likely to be offered are low C6 (from hihg to low) E-C-A-G-E-C-A-F and Don Helm's E6. The E6 is the same intervals as the C6 but tuned up higher (with lighter gaged strings of course). It is (from high to low) G#-E-C#-B-G#-E-C#-A. When using this tuning I found that I rarely touched the 7th string and never used the 8th. But Bobbe Seymore has some instructional material for this tuning available on the Nashville Steel Guitar sight. Given your stated goals, it may be your best bet at this time. And there are players who get a wide variety of musical styles out of it, as well. _________________ Amor vincit omnia |

That was very helpful and I thank you for that. now if it would not be too much trouble what would the string gauge be for the c6th set up? |

Look under strings right here on the forum and you will find ready made C6 sets for both high and low with the string guages listed. If your guitar is a short scale, you will want to go slightly heavier. _________________ Amor vincit omnia |

Joseph, if you decide for C6, you might also want to get Cindy Cashdollar's 2 DVD-courses, "Learn To Play Western Swing Steel Guitar", which teach playing this tuning in the style you are looking for. |

Note: I think Cindy's includes both high C6 AND Helm's E6. That is a good one. _________________ Amor vincit omnia |

Hi,
you can order Cindy's DVD from Amazon, and, nope, it doesn't include E6, just C6 (ACEGACEG low-to-high). |
