I built a guitar several years ago. Once you build your guitar and are ready to finish it, think airbrush. I contacted a local college art class. They did a wondergul job on a blue and green sea wave effect on mine. Since they did it as a class project, I paid for the paint only.

John had a brochure on building lap steels too. It was about $10.00 as I last recall.

John's book was available from the HSGA a few years ago, dont know if it's still available.
A six string steel could use any number of regular guitar pick-ups (bridge position), and Seymour Duncan and DiMarzio have 7 string bridge pickups. The DP702 is a Dimarzio type I use.

I wouldn't expect to build just one. The first one is the trial-run, the proto-type, the one that teaches you what not to do on the next one. It will also make the decision as to even making the next one.
