i have a D-10 Mullen with the orginal stock pickups and also a D-10 carter with george L pickups . for a lack of a better term the Carter seems to have a clearer tone or more distinct sound.my question is is this difference more likely just due to the difference in the way the guitars are made of would changing the pickup on the Mullen make it more of a clear distinct sound. hope my question is worded so it makes sense. |

It would help if we knew exactly what kind of pickups the Mullen guitar had. The Mullen is a fine guitar, with a slightly different sound than the Carter, and the pickups might have something to do with it. It could also be the wood, the strings, the changer design, the finish, the age, how it was assembled, or a dozen other different things causing what you're hearing. However, I believe that with good playing techniques, and a good amp, the guitars probably could be made to sound quite similar.
What kind of amp are you using? |

Donny i am useing mostly a rack outfit with evans preamp/eff unit and dcp 750 power amp. sometimes a transtubefex and sometimes a Nv 400 or NV112.i can get as you say about the same overall tone out of either guitar it just seems like the Carter always has a little clearer or crisper.
note seperation i guess you would say and wondered if pickups were likely the reason.the Mullen PU's are stock single coil.
thanks for the response |

Lee, I switched out the stock Mullen pickup on my RP SD-10 a couple of years ago for a George L 10-1 (which I believe Mullen recommends for a humbucker). The Mullen pickup is a fine one, I just found the George L to be a bit brighter. |

The Carter with TT pu is hard to beat for sound, a lot of people think they have the Push pull sound, mine sounds very much like my Shobud Professional, both have tt pu on them and both have great tone and sustain.

Lee, the answer is that it is in the design of the guitars. I have owned/played both. They sound exactly as you described. No amount of pickup changing will change those characteristics. Been there, done that. |
