Dear all,

What are your opinion on vintage Nick Manoloff tonebars?

Cheers,

Fred

I love them and purchased a few. I like the weight and feel (the tips are perfect). The only bars I like better are the ones that were made for me by Jim Burden.

Somewhere in the mid '50's, I purchased a Nick Manoloff tone bar. It was solid brass with no plating.
If I used it for just a little while, my hands came away with a strong brass smell that was difficult to wash off.
Didn't have it very long.

When I bought my Gibson Console Grande in 1953, I bought the Nick Manaloff 8 string bar which I still have sitting on the CG. And yes, your hand turns green when you use it, especially if you sweat!!!

Since it has Nick Manaloff on the end of the bar, my younger son about 30 years asked the obvious question, "Dad, did a Nick Manaloff own this steel before you had it"?!!!

I have a collection of bars, nothing spectangular, but even a glass-fused-on-metal one. Several of the coloured ("u" for Canadians!!) plastic ones, even a wrist pin from a 30's car.

I have a couple, an 8-string and a couple of 6 string metal ones. I got rid of the plastic ones when the $$ meant more than the collection. They are fun to have around, one day I'll figure out how to post pictures and post a photo of my "case candy shrine". Lots of old picks and bars.

I have a little Manoloff bar for 6-string lap that has been in my posession since 1964, when I started taking lap steel lessons as a ten year old. I still use it once in awhile. Good bars.

I have a white plastic one, but don't consider it a very good bar due to the tone problem with plastic. Tone and sustain are sorely affected. I like the weight of it though...very light!
