Hi, all. New to the Forum, and also new to Steel Guitars (I won’t get my new Morrell 6 string until Wed). I have been spending a LOT of time reading past posts and find a wealth of good information there. Since I’m left handed, I found the following comment VERY helpful “They don’t make left handed piano’s”.. Cool! But then I’m ambidextrous - that means I screw things up equally with either hand! I’m sure my poor dog is looking forward to my playing - she growls at me when I play my keyboard.

"I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous". - Author unknown
I once worked with an exceptionally good guitar player that did everything left-handed....except play guitar.
Obviously, your choice of available left-handed guitars is limited (but not as limited as left-handed pianos).

Hi Don - Welcome!
You're wise not to let your "sinister" side dominate your steel playing.
Like Gerald says, it would limit your choices of steel guitars. I don't believe I've seen a lefty Stringmaster or Custom or Ricky Bakelite or Supro/McKinney/Oahu etc.
Come to think of it, I can't recall seeing any kind of left handed steel guitar. I suppose there has to be one somewhere. The real problem would be finding left handed picks and tone bar . .

That's cool Don, we kid each other a lot around here. And now that you've mastered the smileys you're all set.
So, if you're playing piano and you put your right hand in yr pocket, does that constitute left-handed playing?

Hi Don, welcome from the foothills of the left coast.
I am left handed in everything I do except guitar, and wouldn't want it any other way.
I think that left handed people who play right handed instruments (guitar) have an advantage over right handed players. IMHO it is the left hand that developes the 'tone' on a guitar. Steel guitar is more a combination of the two....
There is a forumite named Lefty who I think plays a left handed Dekley, he'll probably chime in here soon.

There's a forumite named Smiley who.....well, this is a family forum...
I'm left handed also, and I also do everything left handed, except play. I have been using that little hand exerciser with the individual finger grips. It's helped build up my right hand coordination as far as picking and strength goes.
Unfortunately, the faster I'll be able to pick, the more bad notes I'll hit. If they only had that exerciser for the brain....[This message was edited by HowardR on 14 November 2005 at 06:56 PM.] |
