I know there was a thread on this sometime back but I've searched until I'm dead and can't find it. OS is Home XP and it's legal, have done nothing to the computer but yesterday I checked for a couple of updates and can download them but cannot install. Tried everything in Google to no avail. Any suggestions besides throw this darn Dell in the creek.

Fred;
What error message are you receiving when the updates fail?
There is a procedure that was discussed a few months ago, which renames the folder containing the catalog of installed updates. If your issue requires that solution I will re-post it here.
In the interrum, here is a link to a Microsoft Knowlewdge Base article about troubleshooting failed Windows Updates: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906602 _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Wiz, here's the kicker, When I go to "review your update history", the only entry is a successful "windows installer succeeded". there are no error entrys at all. That's what is so confusing to me. No error codes, no red x's, nothing but good things. The updates will download but will not install.

Well Wiz and all I've tried everything I can find and this monkey just will not update. PERIOD. Guess I'll stumble through the mess one more time and then out with the double barrel.

Phred;
Did you try everthing listed on this page on PCHell? I have used that technique to fix the same problem you described. It may take several attempts to get this to work, including rebooting and trying the commands again. Perseverance is the key to fixing Windows Update failures.
If nothing else works you might try using System Restore to a date before this began. If that is too far back, you could try running " SFC /SCANNOW " with the Windows CD in the CD tray. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Wiz, I 've tried everything six or seven times including everything you've suggested. I found out yesterday my system restore will not function and yes it's operational. I think it's time for a new computer and you can bet your booties it won't be another Dell from Hell. LOL

That's interesting. Dell from Hell.
My wife and I both have Dell computers and flat screens with nary a problem in 5 years. I guess they were not made on a Monday. |
