Shameless Plug Department:
FYI .... My article on Tiki Bar Guitar is in the Fall 2007 issue of The Fretboard Journal. I gave 'em my all-time favorite Ralph Kolsiana 8x10 of him in performance at the Tiki-Hut. I wish they had used more of the other great photos we had but they did run a wonderful full-page, color Don The Beachcomber menu contributed by forumite, Kevin Bullat. Unfortunately, the editor trimmed out the section on modern players which had some cool pics of several forumites in action including the Haole Cats, Smokin' Menhuenes and Gary Brandin wirth the Blue Hawaiians. That's show biz.
The issue also features my in-depth interview with Nato Lima of Los Indios Tabajaras and great stories on Fylde guitars, Carr custom amps, David Bromberg and a lot more. If you haven't discovered FJ, check it out. |

Finally got to check out your article, Andy, and what a cool one it was! Thanx for the heads up.
To bad they left out the majority of your photos, but the shot of Ralph and the band was priceless.
There's lot's of good readin' and lookin' in there like you mentioned, but I really enjoyed the '70s Thomas guitars article. |

That was neat! My Dad worked as a waiter at the Hollywood Don the Beachcomber back in the day. |

Hi Andy,
I really enjoyed your article about Tiki Bars in the current issue of Fretboard Journal, too.
That said, I thoroughly enjoyed your article in that same issue about Nato Lima of Los Indios Tabajaras. In my opinion it's some of your best writing yet, and a fascinating story.
Can you recommend a Los Indios recording, especially one that features the Del Vecchio?
Keep up the great work, Andy!
Fretboard Journal seems to be steadily improving...I may have to spring for a subscription.
All the best,
Bob |

Thanks, Bob. I see a few minor editing things I wish I'd tweaked on the Tiki story but I AM proud of the Nato Lima piece. He's an amazing person. Not sure what to recommend for in-print CDs by Los Indios, but Maria Elena and many of the renditions of pop songs feature the Del Vecchio. Nato was selling his before leaving the US and I almost bought it.
The editors have a grand vision for FJ. Hopefully, they'll hit the mark more often than not. Looking forward to your book on Sacred Steel! |
