hi, my 50's gibson lap steel (unsure of the model; maybe a br9?) has this pickup installed. i'm wondering which pickup model it is, and whether other folks might install a newer pickup. i'm happy with the sound but i enjoy swapping out pickups.

regards,

blake

It looks like a standard P-90 pickup to me. Gibson used essentially the same pickup on almost all their electric instruments from WWII through 1956, and still uses the today on some guitars. Many people swear by them as the best pickups ever.
If you take it out, can I have it?

I'm also a fan of the P90 sound... Cool

What would you swap it out with?

I don't know what some of these older Gibsons are worth, but I would avoid any modification that can't be undone later (put down the router...walk away from the guitar) Whoa!

Those old Gibson P90's do have a nice tone.

If you are set on swapping pickups, you could try a humbucker in a P90 size, no routing required.
DiMarzio makes a couple and Vintage Vibe has a nice one too.
