Yesterday I posted a question in the forum under the Eletronics section about using MIDI. I have a National D-8. The response that I received was great. However, the discussion mostly centered around the use of a Roland synthesizer with PSG's. Have any of you used MIDi with a 6 or 8 string non-pedal
Thanks in advance, |

Stan,
Maybe it was a slow day on the Forum, some attention deficit disorder kind of phenomenon, or attentions were turned elsewhere, but I thought that you should have received at least some response.
I have no experience with this, but this deserves a bump upwards.
Good luck,
Don |

I would guess that not many people have used MIDI with lap steel. When I tried in the past, I found that the tracking isn't good enough to handle the pitch variations that a lap steel can provide. I've never had enough of an interest in following up based on the price of a Roland pickup and synthesizer.

basically MIDI is for keyboard type discrete pitches, and there have been some attempts to synthesize the glissando artificially...but i think it is more difficult, less predictable, to emulate the lap steel guitarist's left hand than a pedal steeler's. i would be interested to know if MIDI existed for the violin, for example

Good job Basil, as you always do. I have been thinking about putting a GK-2 pickup on my little Artisan lap, this encourages me to do it. I now have it on a strat.

The key to good MIDI is also the instrument you try to emulate an dhow. if you want a synthy sound you ,use that but, if you want to sound like another instrument, you have to sue samples. It comes pretty close.I so orchestral mock ups when I work on ads, film, etc. and it's all about how you use the gear.
The current MIDI tech does work. it's not perfect but, it works.
A lot of people are opting for fibre optic bridge saddles rather than the Gk2 as well.
A desigenr just came out with a fiorewire based MIDI guiatr and another with USB. this will start cleaning things up. |

Hi guys, very interesting thread I use a midi synth on my 6 string lead strat and have for over 20 yrs. Check out this firewire guitar its only a matter of time before this technology is ready for all steel string instruments (steel and lap steel) Just think of the ramifications no tracking issues no glitches no delays no nothing just clean pure digital signal being sent from each string to run synths and bypass midi.
