My friend, Les Cook, has signaled that his Sam Ku West project is finished and the CD is now available. This looks like a real treat for those fans of early Hawaiian playing.
I'm eager to hear it myself.

Just a bump for this amazing collection.
For my few pence worth it sits alongside the Rounder Sol collections (but with better reproduction) or the Yazoo King Benny album.
Can't believe that someone hadn't compiled Sam's work before.
The guy was a guitar monster!
Check it out.

This deserves another bump. This is a nice collection of music with very good liner notes.
Sam Ku West's recording of "Huehue" has always been one of my favorite vintage steel recordings. It's great getting to hear everything else he recorded. It's interesting that he recorded a lot of the same tunes that Sol Hoopii recorded during this period.
Les Cook did a fantastic job researching this. The liner notes (based on contemporary newspaper reports and information supplied by surviving members of Sam Ku West's family) are fascinating. They give a sense of what it must have been like to have been a touring steel guitarist in the 1920's.
If you're a fan of vintage steel guitar you should own this CD.

I just got mine today ... very cool !!!
Reading the liner notes ... really "expressed" my GG Gossip Gene ...
Somethin' sure seemed "fishy" with that whole Irene thing.
Very interesting read ... and a great compilation of his work.
Thanks Mr. Cook for all your hard work !!!
