I am looking for inputs on a good tuning for 8 string for REAL country. I have been playing the 6th tunings ( C6 & A6). I am now wanting to delve into some straight Country sounds. ....Nice two note chords with that E9th feel. I have heard about several E13 tunings . Now I am looking for recomendations on which one or few work best over this type of music.

Don Helms' tuning is possibly a good place to start.

At the 2004 Dallas show, Mike Auldridge played some beautiful (as if it would be anything else) real country music on 8 string Resophonic tuned to C9.

this works well for me, it can be thought of as E6 over A6, or the E9 neck with pedals up and down.

Low to high:
D E F# G# B C# E G#
Is the one I use and can play almost everything I play on my pedal steel; on this non-pedal tuning.

The E13 that Ricky posted is eight tenths of Tom Morrell's tuning, and Tom is arguably the coolest nonpedal player there is.
In that E13, you might also consider losing the high G# (that little string might sound too thin) and adding a low B or even low E like Tom Morrell.

I used this old E9/13 tuning:
Lo>E–D–F#–G#–B–C#–E–G#, but; it would be good in (C):
Lo>C–Bb–C/D–E–G–A–C–E
