Double 8 Alamo

Hi Non Pedlers,

I am curious as to what might be the value of a double eight Alamo steel guitar with 3 legs?

My brother purchased this several years ago and we are thinking of completely re-storing this steel.

He seems to think that it is about 1949?

Any thoughts about it appreciated.

Terry, if you can post some photos, it will help us try to guess a value. I couldn't suggest what type of pickups would fit in your Alamo lap steel without seeing what kind of pickup is in there currently, nor could I try to guess the value of such a relatively rare item.
Alamo steels aren't considered particularly collectible, but any eight string, double neck steel guitar should be worth a bit of something.

I like those Alamos. All the ones I've seen are very 50's modern, with some pastel colors and pop designs. Even the amps are like a piece of Eames furniture. I've never seen a double-8. Please post pictures if you can.

Al,

This steel guitar we believe was made around 1949. According to what I can find out it is either an Alamo Futuramic or Alamo Pro Futuramic double eight. It is of a Maple wood. When we get it restored, I will post the before and after pictures of it.

This double eight sounds really good but we've decided to change the pickups out for Bill Lawrence pickups. I think it will be even better. We are having the keys replated, etc.

I think it will be just dynamite when it is finished and completely restored. We plan to keep it and play it.

What Mike said, adding that you should strongly consider having the original pick-ups re-worked/wound and bring it closer to original status, which is way cooler than the planned alternatives.

Yes, your right about changing the original steel and restoring it. We are considering this too.

I have an alamo D-8 I've had for years,don;t have the legs for it,the few times I played it just layed it on a keyboard stand.

Hi Terry,

I have a six string Alamo Futuramic (natural finish, asymetric shape, grey knobs and pickup cover) and like it very much. The (alnico) pickup is not very loud, compared to modern pickups. It sounds clear and bright, but not harsh. I use a preamp box to get the sound a little bit thicker.
