Has anybody put a Fishman in a Beard Goldtone? Just curious what it might sound like.
Another question, If I buy an SM 57 or simular mic, and plug it into the mic channel of my Fender Acoustasonic, and mic my Goldtone, shouldn't that give me a fairly decent tone? you think? maybe? Confused

Does the fender Acoustasonic have a built-in preamp circuit?

I have a Fishman in my Benoit Reso, its a bit over-bright and a bit "quacky", if you EQ it its pretty ok, but a Shure 57 is better, combined is better than either.

I use a Shure 57 plugged into a XLR transformer adaptor to 1/4" jack to the input on a TubeWorks IVAC 65 amp on my Beard GoldTone when I want too amplify it and it sounds pretty good with the 57 placed about twelve inches above the guitar top. I don't have an " Acoustic " amp ; but the Tubeworks head has a bass/treble/low mid and high mid 4 knob tone section that helps shape things . A 10 inch Eminence bass speaker seems to sound best compared to a guitar speaker for some reason , although so far I haven't used it playing anywhere except at home , so it may not work in any other setting very well . Don't know until I try it in that scenario whenever work and family frees up the time .My Shure Beta Green Condenser mike in place of the 57 on the Dobro sounds too thin to me through the amp . When I plug both mikes in to a small mixer's microphone inputs and eq'ed them both and raise them higher up on the stands to about 30 inches above the guitar they sound pretty good monitored through headphones. I did this as a test so I can hopefully do some recording at home . It seems to work best with the 57 pointed at the middle of the cone halfway between the bridge and the cone edge , and the stand with the condenser mike on the other side pointed between the picking area and the soundholes next to the end of the fingerboard .
I also have a Sansamp Tech 21 Acoustic DI preamp unit ; but it's best suited for piezo pickep instruments . It totally gets rid of the quack .

The Fishman reso pickup can sound good, but requires significant equalization to reduce high end/treble. If you have the option the Schertler Basik pickup is a better choice, IMO - (I've owned both)

A microphone through an acoustic instrument amplifier will work, but it will probably start to feedback before you get very loud. If you have the option to run the microphone through a P.A. system do it, you'll get better tone and lots more headroom before feedback.

Hope that helps...

Thanks ya'll. I can run it through a PA system. I just wanted to get some advice before I bought an SM 57. I thought since the amp is made for acoustic instruments it might sound purty good with the SM 57.The amp has a feedback elliminator on it.
I think I'll go ahead and buy one anyways.

Terry ; you might want to check out Shure's newer redesign of the classic Shure 57 called the 57 Beta and compare it to see if it's a better piece for you. I was going to check one of these mikes out but haven't gotten around to it yet

Adding my two cents, I agree with Rob, the Schertler Basik is the best I've heard and I've tried just about everything over the years. Good natural sound and plenty of volume. The Fishman is clangy sounding and doesn't respond well in the lower register and it seemed I had to crank it to near feedback and keep fingers crossed.

I ordered mine with a Fishman installed but i wouldn't spend that money again. It's quite harsh and prone to feedback, even when properly adjusted, wich is quite hard to do by the way. You can EQ it but i use a microphone instead.
An SM57 will sound fine, a beta 57 a bit better and it's less likely to feedback onstage.
AKG c1000 with a hypercardoid capsule is another good alternative.

I really appreciate your advice folks. If I have a pup installed I'll be sure and get the Schertler.
But, for what it would cost me to buy a Schertler and have it installed, I could probly sell my Goldtone, add a few hundred bucks to it, and buy a Rob Ickes model with the Schertler already installed.
I think I saw one on ebay for around $900.

Anybody know what kind of dobro that the steel player on the Midwest Country show on RFD was playing last night. I don't know what brand it was, and though his playing was very good, I didn't care for the tone at all.
