When tuning a string that has neither a raise nor a lower change on it, like string 7 on my guitar, is it best to tune this string open with the raise tuning screw, or open with the keyhead tuner?
Thanks! |

I always tuned mine with the "key head". When I worked for Little Roy Wiggin's "Music City" music store in Nashville, that was the Emmons dealer for Nashville at the time, we always tuned the strings that were not raised or lowered by the key head.
Same way with one that was only lowered - tune the open with the key head and the lower with the allen screw on the end. |

Thanks for your reply, Jack. I didn't know if it makes a difference for the finger to always be resting on the screws or not; I don't really hear a difference if it tunes against the screw or not, but I know that there some proceedures that people like to follow with the push-pull.
Thanks,

The finger will rest on the screw regardless, because of string tension.
It might be a good idea to set the finger (by hand) for a half tone (or full tone) raise, and tune it open with the endplate screw, but don't connect any rods, that way it is there if you need it, and tune it thereafter at the keyhead
