I had the amazing opportunity of playing on stage with Johnny Gimble last week. Johnny was the 2008 Guest Master Artist at the Augusta Heritage Center in Elkins, West Virgina during Swing Week. I was also on staff as the Swing Ukulele and Steel Guitar instructor.

Johnny was accompanied by his son Dick Gimble on guitar.

Here is Johnny during an afternoon workshop. I'm on steel, Roger Bellow - mandolin, Kathy Reitz - bass, Andrew Guterman - drums.

I also played steel during Johnny's Thursday night concert performance (audio soon!).

Here is the Sunday night Western Swing Dance at the outdoor dance pavillion. I'm on steel, Marv Reitz - clarinet, Steve Larrance - drums, Kathy Reitz - bass, Liz Masterson - MC, Roger Bellow - guitar, Katie Holmes - fiddle and and the renowned Peter Ecklund on trumpet.

Here are three more videos from Augusta Swing Week 2008.

Johnny Gimble and band playing 'Lone Star Rag' during an afternoon workshop.

America's favorite "Cowgirl Singer" Liz Masterson sings 'I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter' with Johnny and band.

Here's the staff Western Swing band playing the Sunday night dance performing 'My Shoes Keep Walking Back To You'. This song was a big hit for Ray Price and was also recorded by Johnny Cash, Eddie Arnold and Elvis Costello.

Thanks Brad,

Yes it was an amazing experience. The videos you see are from an informal afternoon workshop performance.

I also got to be a member of the backup band for Johnny's Thursday night concert set in the 1500 seat campus auditorium. I played every Western Swing lick I knew at least three times. Laughing

I used my 1954 Fender Champion with it's new Jason Lollar pickup for every appearance with JG. During the workshop I ran it through my Roland Cube Street. For the concert I used my Roland Cube 60.

I used the Cube 60 for all the dance videos you see.

Looks like a ton of fun, and what thrill to play with a legend.

What amp models and settings do you use on the Cube Street and the Cube 60? Sounds really nice.

On the Cube 60 I use the "Tweed" setting with the gain set at about 12 o'clock.

On the Cube Street I use the plain-vanilla "Instrument" setting with the gain at about 1 o'clock. I don't care for ANY of the amp models on the Cube Street. The Instrument setting just let's me use the amp in a pure mode.

Hey Gerald, that's pretty cool!
Your Champion sounds killer with the JL pickup, fatter than the original Tele pickup for sure.
You played some great stuff.
Very cool to play with Johnny Gimble et al - now all you have to do is is get him to play at the NP Session in Dallas next year along with Herb and Walter . .
Nice videos, thanks for sharing!
