Strange bedfellows dept. ..... There's a nice article in this week's New Yorker Magazine (August 20 cover date) about Jerry Douglas' visit to Matt Umanov's guitar shop. It touches on vintage guitars as antiques and underscores, in JD's knowledge about Weissenborns, that we only see the tip of the iceberg when a master musican performs. What we don't see is the vast knowledge and years of experience that brought them there. |

Andy, "tip of the iceberg" is right.
I had dropped off a steel to Jerry last week and after the show had an opportunity to hang out with him and the conversation turned to his collection of steels at his studio. Believe me that guy has one heck of a stable!
His knowledge in instruments extends much, much farther than just resonators.
And now if I may, a gratuitous picture of the evening!

Well, if the writer is uninformed re Hawaiian steel that's not unexpected for something that's so far under the general public's radar. I think it's great to see steel guitar and Jerry Douglas get some exposure in a venue like the New Yorker magazine.
Also this week, the Boston Globe published a musician profile that had large, half-page photos. Two photos showed a Chandler RH lap steel. |
