I would like to mention that there were 3 steel guitarists in the backup band that played for the Fender Hall of Fame induction ceremony. All of players in this group are also Fender employees and they did a wonderful job. I had the best seat in the house, on front row right in front of them.
Mike Lewis, one of FMIC's top senior marketing guys and owner of an Emmons push-pull, played a classic candy apple red Fender Stringmaster triple neck that I understand was a "one-off" for one of Leo's musical friends. James Pennebaker, a top Nashville sideman in his own right and also an owner of an Emmons push-pull, played fiddle. James helped to set the emotional tone with his work on classics such as "Faded Love." Donnie Wade, a top guy in our Guild & Tacoma guitar lines who has an incredible collection of early steels, was on acoustic rhythm guitar.
The 2 non-steelers in the group were Shane Nicholas on take-off guitar & vocals and John Willis on upright bass. Shane is the head of the Fender guitar amplifier line. He helped me to realize a personal dream by allowing me to develop the Steel-King. John is head of our SWR bass amplifier line.
All played period correct instruments through our boutique, our hand wire, tweed reissue amplifiers ('57 Twin & '57 Deluxe). Shane's vocals even went through the microphone channel of one of these amps.
Best Regards,
Sam Marshall

I'm sure glad he allowed you to develop the Fender Steel King. I'm still loving mine!
I see you're a Mullen U-12 player, too. _________________ Lee, from South Texas - Down On The Rio Grande

Hi Lee,
I got the Mullen U-12 in 1992. It is stock. Before that, I had an MSA classic D-10 for several years.
Hi Jack,
Like myself, Chuck didn't play at the Fender Hall of Fame induction ceremony. He & I have been working closely together lately. Come to find out, we are both from Richardson, TX & big time Johnny Bush fans. Chuck was the first guitar player I met when I moved to PHX in 1985. My wife met him & his wife at a laudromat.....
Dear Jody,
I wish you could have been there, too. I am sure it would have meant a lot to you as it certainly did for me.
I understand that you started with Fender almost immediately after Charlie Hayes died. I played in a jazz/standards jam session with a retiree that lives in this area named Bruce. He retired from owning a music store in Terrytown, NY. Bruce said that he knew you and had dealt with Charlie Hayes. He also said that Stan Getz would drop by the store every Saturday night to buy reeds.
Best Regards,
Sam |
