I'm working up some charts based on the chord progressions shown in fake books. The "Colorado Cook Book" uses a couple of symbols I am not familiar with. Perhaps one of you can give me some help.

1.) A full size ZERO (0) is used following the chord name in one particular measure. Would that be the same as the degree symbol (Superscript lower case letter "o") which is sometimes used to designate a diminished chord. If not, then what does it represent?

2. Several measures use a triangle following the chord name. What does the triangle designate?

(I realize that these questions confirm my musical ignorance -- but at least one of you guys just gotta be smarter than me.) Embarassed

Thanks.

Yes Roy,usually an O is a diminished chord
an O w: a slash in it, is half diminished chord
a triangle is a major seventh chord
- is a minor chord (ex: A-)
they're called short cut symbols

In my experience, the '0' should be superscript 'o' and does indeed indicate diminished.

The triangle means Major 7th chord (1,3,5,7)

Of course, you should check these with your ear before using!

Looking forward to hearing your set in St Louis!

Crowbear and Jim:

Thanks. The zero with a slash representing a half diminished makes sense, as a plan zero is a diminished. The case I cited did, in fact, have a slash through the zero. The Triangle to represent a Major 7th is a new one on me.

Jim:
I agree that the half diminished should be superscripted, as is the diminished. My pea-sized brain may have figured it out if it had been superscripted.

Jim, don't expect too much when I do my set in St. Louis. I still remember my hot licks, but by the time I get there the band is on the next song. I'm looking forward to hearing you in the Jazz room if L.T.Zinn doesn't have me scheduled for the same time in the Hawaiian room.

Roy, your tracks with Pee Wing King were a major inspiration to me when I was learning to play steel. I wore out a couple of vinyl LPs trying to copy your style. Anything that you play is fine with me. I'm real sorry that I won't be in St. Louis this year to hear your set in the Hawaiian room.

Roy, Jim is right
it's a small o rather than a big One
kinda like this : A°
i believe scandinavian keyboards have the slash in the o, i don't

another shortcut cymbal is + = augmented

Crow Bear,

In Microsoft Word on a PC I have found that you can click on "Format" then "Font" then select the "Font" tab then check "Superscript" and "Strike through" to get the small "o" with a dash through the middle and printed at the top of the regular chord name as the Half Diminished designator. I don't know how this would be done on a Macintosh.

The triangle can be produced by clicking on "Insert" then on "Symbol" to get a table of symbols. There is a triangle in the table that can be selected. The triangle, also, can be made into a superscript as with the "o" above.
