HI, A while back there was a topic where someone recommended the Cruztone because the lower strings had what he called more growl(I think that is what he called it.) On a lot of lap steels the first string especially will be too bright if you try to get the lower strings to be more bright,or have more definition,or be more twangy. I want more twang on the lower strings. Are there any other steels that have this? Thanks |

Well, I'll stick my neck out. When I started on Dobro we called it the dreaded muddy bottom. Sometimes it IS the instrument. But sometimes it's the type and/or brand of strings, the gauge, and also the amp and the settings on that can be a problem. And sometimes it's technique. Most lap players who play my steel seem to sound a lot better than I do on it. Especially on the bottom! |

Laps with longer scale length should have more "twang" and definition than shorter scale ones.
And with a pickup with individually adjustable pole pieces (like a humbucker or a P90), setting the pickup itself lower on the bass side, but raising the individual pole pieces to the necessary height might also give more definition. |

All these things are true, but you're picking technique has the most influence (as well as amp volume and tone) for 'twang' and 'definition' (Italics used because they're subjective terms).
For instance, I just use fingers, not even a thumbpick (which may be shortsighted on my part, but I'm coming to this as a guitar player), so the attack, tone etc sounds way different than thumb/fingerpicks.
I just prefer the thicker, thumpier sound (like Derek Trucks gets). |

Hey David; One of the main reasons I prefer the GeorgeBoard over many of the others, is for that reason. Very Clear twangy low strings; without compromising the tone of the high strings.
One can be had here>
