I was the lucky guy that was high bidder on the semi- hollow body Lap King guitar that Jason DuMont posted about a few days ago. I had to post because I am just awestruck at the remarkable craftsmanship......no...... artistry of Jason. I could go on and on about his work but I thought a couple more pictures would speak volumes. It's absolutely gorgeous, it plays like a dream and the Jason Lollar pickup sounds quite like my friends Gibson Console Grande (as intended). If any of you are in the market for a new steel do yourself a favor and don't overlook Jason DuMont. Oh yeah, did I mention Jason is an absolute pleasure to deal with? Making phone calls to make sure it arrived OK and even upgraded the shipping at N\C. http://www.lapking.com/ A true gentleman to deal with.
That's my window blinds and plants reflections you can see in the mirror like finish!

OMG -- that's friggin' BEAUTIFUL!
I'll admit, I'm not a big fan of semi-hollow lap steel guitars (tone always seems a bit too "scooped: in the midrange for me), but that's one gorgeous instrument.
I think Jason is building some of the most exciting lap instruments today, as well as George and Colin, and several others out there.

Mark. change your name to Jason. then there would be three Jasons involved with that beautiful instrument.
the two that were are top notch.
I have become interested in hollowed or chambered lap steels. I think another voice would be good in my home.
thanks for the detail pictures. wow. |

The finish is time consuming and well worth it. Few builders put so much time into such fine details. |

Thanks guys. I didn't say too much about the tone because it's such a relative and personal thing. To my ears it has a rich, powerful sound that I'm totally happy with. A Gibson Console Grande is the closest thing I can compare it to, only with more punch. I have 2 Fender Stringmasters (one of them a single that I call a Stringmaster to simpify things) and a National Console 8 (single) and this guitars tone lies somewhere in between the two. I'm thrilled with every aspect of it.
Did I mention Jason is a great guy to deal with ?

The more I play this guitar the more I love it. Jason is on vacation right now so maybe I'll give this thread a bump this weekend so he's sure to see all of your kind comments. I'm just assuming he'll be home this weekend. I'm sure he'll appreciate them greatly. Thanks guys! |

Jason, that's one fabulous-looking steel. I love the F-hole and the slanted pickup. I always wondered what a steel similar to a high-end, Gibson-influenced standard jazz guitar might be like; now I know. Awesome! |

It took a bit of courage to post this link with all the heavy hitters that hang out here but I thought there might be some interest in hearing this guitar. Jason Lollar has posted an .MP3 I made with The Lap King. I want to thank both Jasons for this instrument, I'm loving it more and more! And thanks to my mentor for giving me the guts to post this link (he knows who he is ).
You will have to scroll down the page to where it shows the "Gibson Console Grande 8 Pickup" and click on MP3. I've only been playing about a year and a half so go easy on me willya' ?
