was this model offered in an eight string version? and did all Studio Deluxe models come with the legs? These guitars are too cool.
Duhhhh... (brain fade) I just realized the Champ is the same guitar without the legs. [This message was edited by Andy Sandoval on 10 October 2005 at 10:59 AM.] |

Andy,
You are right about the legs.
However, in my opinion, the Studio DeLuxe is nowhere near as good a player as the DeLuxe 6 or 8--the ones with the Stringmaster-type pickups. There is a world of difference in tone. And the blend knob enables the DeLuxe models to acheive a variety of tone, or timbre.
I say, save your money and get a DeLuxe. I have owned both. No comparison.
All the best,
Bob |

Bob you must be psychic. That's probably what I'm gonna do. I have a 55' Stringmaster T-8 that's got an awesome sound but would like something a little more portable to tote around. |

They were called the Deluxe 6 and Deluxe 8. Here's a photo from the same 1972/3 Fender catalog:

I would love to get my hands on a Deluxe 8.
But in the buying and selling of non-pedals around here in and on Ebay, I can't say that I've ever really run across one of these.
Were they made in small numbers?

You all just missed one in the for sale section..... but I didn't!!!
I absolutly LOVE this Steel! Stringmaster LIGHT! Everything you want without the weight.
Oh, and did I mention that it looks as good as the picture Brad posted? This baby looks brand new!
You just have to check the "Insturments for Sale" listings everyday to be sure you don't miss something. Non pedal steels usually go pretty fast.

I have 2 studio deluxes and i've always enjoyed them. My theory is that the sound could be vastly improved by putting a modern pickup in it but i've never tried it. After all, Fender put it's "budget" Mustang type pickup in these guitars. I've always thought a stacked humbucking (ala Barden) would really work well. Or, maybe a Lollar Charlie Christian type pickup. |

What is the name of that blonde colour?
Is there an automotive or other paint that is close?

Gary-could you give me a ballpark idea what I should expect to pay for a fairly clean Deluxe should one come up for sale?

I paid $850. A little high for most steels but this one is pristine. I would say between $650 & $900. The biggest problem is finding them. It took me two years to find the one I wanted. There are a not a bunch of deluxes out there but a deluxe eight string, short scale with stringmaster pickups is really tough.
