I brought this song up on another thread, & it has been on my mind lately. The song is "I Think It's Going To Work Out Fine" played by Ry Cooder & David Lindley off of Cooder's "Bop Till You Drop" CD. There are layers after layers electric & acoustic slide on this song that I find very beautiful. Have any of you heard this song or tried to learn it? There are some great licks in it. I read in an interview of Cooder's where he said that he & Lindley got so deep in recording different parts, that he really can't tell who is who on certain parts. What a blast they must have had in the studio!

Yeah Mike...That's it...they(Cooder-Lindley) slow it down & do it instrumentally. Jerry Douglas also did an instrumental version, but faster. It is the Cooder-Lindley version that gives me chills.

On a related topic, I recently acquired my first David Lindley album, El-Rayo X, after hearing all the raves about it on this board (btw, fun album!).
I was suprised to hear a lot of guitar parts with a sound that I associated with Ry Cooder's electric sound from Bop Till You Drop. It sounds like fingerpicked electric with a phaser. I always associated that sound as a signature Ry Cooder tone, so I was surprised to hear it on the Lindley album.[This message was edited by Bill Leff on 03 October 2005 at 11:19 AM.] |

Bill, you must get a copy of "El-Rayo X Live". You can just tell that the whole band & Lindley are having so much fun playing. The tone that lindley gets live is killer. He plays electric lap steel, weissenborn acoustic, & electric guitar. A great live CD. |

Is that the one that costs $50? If so, in the words of my favorite clown:
"Homey don't play dat!"

We're talking about a couple of different releases here. Mr. Leff is referring to The Cooder/Lindley Family Tour, which Mr. Dave sells for $40 on his web site. I agree that it's a fine recording, well worth owning if you like this sort of thing. Lindley and Cooder play various instruments, including Weissenborn guitar, accordion and bajo sexto at times. They're joined by Joachim Cooder on percussion and Roseanne Lindley on vocals on some songs.
The song "I Think It's Going To Work Out Fine" does not appear on that release, but does appear on Ry Cooder's Bop Til You Drop. You can hear a sample on Amazon's web page (linked above).
The sound Bill is hearing on David Lindley's El-Rayo X is probably from Lindley's Roland JC-120 amplifier, which has a built in chorus effect. He has used these amps for many years, and may still be playing through one as far as I know.

When I saw Lindley with El Rayo-X in the '80's, he played through a Dumble amp with a Boss CE-2 chorus pedal. I don't think he used a Jazz Chorus much with the lap steel. I have seen him use it in conjunction with an Ashly Preamp with Weissenborn and other acoustic instruments. |
