I am thinking about getting an I Pod. They come in several different formats including a video screen that I would not use. Anyone have any thoughts as to what model to get? Also, do you load CD's on your computer then download to the I Pod?

I'm just an anolog guy stuck in a digital world Oh Well

You say you wouldnt use the video screen......that is, until you get it.

The other options that dont have video are the iPod Nano and the iPod Shuffle.

I have a regular iPod (20GB) as well as the Shuffle. i LOVE my iPod shuffle. It is smaller than a matchbook and holds 12 hours of music.

You can rip CDs to your 'puter, or purchase music from iTunes or other music stores, then load them to the iPod.

I thought the video was a gimmick, but got it anyway on sale.

I wouldn't get another WITHOUT video!

Yes, you load your CD's into iTunes on your computer, then sync it to the iPod. You can create categories for genres, create playlists based on any criteria you want - they're really flexible.

The video function is the kicker. There's all kinds of software that allows you to copy everything from Youtube videos to entire movies onto it. The video quality is surprisingly good, and I can't tell you how many times I've watched music videos...or movies...sitting in a doctor's waiting room, on an airplane, etc.

Don't worry about no knowing how to "go digital" - most of it is "drag and drop".

The most recommended seems to be the 30 gigabyte iPod Video - that's what I have. It's plenty for most uses, although I will probably sell mine soon and go to the next biggest one - I keep a few movies on it for the kids as well and need the extra space.

I really was not sure how much I'd use it - man, was I wrong...it's used every single day, and has never had a single problem.

Sidebar - another big use that I don't personally use is audiobooks. Many people listen to them...oh, and one I DO use a bit is listening to "podcasts" - too much required to explain it here, but just be assured you'll want a good amount of hard drive space on one AND the video features!

They are pretty cool for practicing too. Put your lesson tracks, music minus steel, or anything you want to learn. Get a wire from Radio Shack, mini stereo to 1/4 stereo and plug into your NV112 & play along thru your amp or with headphones

It is pretty amazing that you can put your entire cd collection into something so small.

I read recently that there is a microphone built for an ipod. You plug it in and record directly onto your ipod. Pretty cool for songwriters or anyone who wants to remember a melody line or just hear how silly thier own voice sounds. I think they're fairly cheap too and with reasonable sound quality. Definitely on my list.

I think I read about it in an acoustic guitar magazine.

There is the possibilty of recording on an iPod, but IMO it wastes space.

Most cell phones have a "voice memo" function which is nice for when a little melody pops into your head.

I have a digital voice recorder that holds over 100 hours of recording. 35 bucks at Radio Shack....I record my lessons with Reece Anderson on it.

Len,

I've had the 30 gig iPod Video for a couple of years, and I have never used the video... not even once, but I don't watch TV or movies much. I use it for teaching, practicing, playing music on band breaks, and even for listening enjoyment once in a while! I have about 3000 songs on it and about 400 BIAB practice tracks.

For teaching, I patch it into a set of Roland powered speakers in my studio. When I go to the prep school to teach I have 1000s of songs in my pocket. Just patch the iPod into an amp, and everything I need is right there. It sure beats carrying a boom box and a stack of CDs.

I have a 4gig (flash) Creative player. It plays limited video, holds pics, has a record button for memos, AND records stereo direct into MP3 format up to 160kb quality. FM radio, records FM (low quality wav file)Recharges battery through USB cable. They cost around $150. I prefer flash over hard drive.

I have the 30 gig iPod and absolutely love it. In addition, I got the Belkin tune/talk stereo mic which plugs right into the bottom and use it to record everything from concerts to lessons and even quick licks.
Recording does use up a fair amount of space but when you plug the ipod into the computer, It automatically loads the live recordings into itunes and if you have itunes set up for everthing going into it being coverted to mp3, the files are then made quite small so there is plenty of space for recording. They are then automatically loaded back into your ipod as an mp3 file. You can go into itunes and edit the recording and give it a name and date as well.
By the way, the video part is fantastic. Alison Krauss videos look good on the ipod! The video part is also good to put dvds onto it. You can plug the ipod into video dock and watch the video on a big screen. Saves alot of space.

BTW, Jim S., what is the software to get to download videos from youtube?

Hi Jim,

Can you clue us in about the video recording software you mentioned earlier? What's it called?

Many thanks,

Matt E.

Don, or others, Can you patch an I Pod into a regular small mixer like a Behringer? Thanks, George

I've ran into several people putting their performance sound tracks on an Ipod. You might call it "band in a pocket" My son puts his drum loops for choir and his wifes sound tracks on one.

George -- the answer to your question is yes. Both my Mackie and Bheringer mixers have stereo tape inputs. You just need the right cable -- a stereo min-plug on one end and RCA left and right on the other. Available at any Radio Shack.

The iPod is a fabulous tool. I use mine at gigs to play music on the breaks (I've set up different play lists for different audiences), at home for practice and jamming, and on the road for listening to the stuff I like. With the right cables you can patch into almost anything. If I lost mine, I'd have to replace it immediately.

Thanks Steve and Larry, I use tracks a lot when playing as a single. Sounds like it would be more convenient then using a CD player and having to change CDs. Thanks again, George

Len hold on!!!

You may have bought an I pod by now but if you didn't look at tascom's mp3 player it is the same, it only holds 200 songs but it has a slow-down feature that is very good for learning songs. I found at sweetwater.com.
