Hi,
I use a Line 6 Flextone III for my 6- and 12-string guitars; I want to use it also for the PSG on stage. I know there are amps specifically made for PSG; are there serviceable tones available for the Line 6? Has anyone ever used a Flextone for PSG and achieved reasonable live results? Last thing I really want to do is lug another 50+ lb. piece of gear around with me...
Thanks,

Well - I have used a Flextone II, as well as Pods. If you try the forum search function, you'll see lots of threads on Line6 stuff - most of it geared to the Pod. Most pedal steel players seem to prefer the XT - some players have their XT settings posted. To my understanding, the Flextone III is basically the guts of a Pod XT in a power-amp & speaker-cab configuration. I'm still using my old Pod 2.0, which I actually prefer for guitar, and even that works pretty well for PSG also.
The tones I use mostly are the Blackface I (Deluxe Reverb emulation) and the Blackface II (Twin Reverb emulation). I also have a Flextone II that I have used at times. I bought these years ago, and they are a bit different than the Flextone III.
To get the sounds I wanted for PSG, I had to deep edit (SoundDiver or Line6 Edit) and disable the extra gain switches set up by default, and then tweak the various parameters - especially speaker choices. These things are, by default, set up for guitar players, who tend to want more distortion than "most" PSG players.
I found that after a reasonable amount of dweedling around, I could get pretty good clean Deluxe Reverb-style and Twin Reverb-style sounds - I just slave that into whatever power clean amp I want. Never did I really get it to sound quite like a 200-300 watt Peavey pedal steel amp with a big ole 15" Black Widow speaker, but most of the guys I play with prefer the old Fender sound.
In general, I find the Pod a lot more useful - then I can just carry that little thing, along with a PSG amp like the Peavey Nashville 112 to use as a slave. If I want the Peavey sound, I just plug straight in. If I want the more Fender-style sound, I go through the Pod. |
