A friend just e-mailed me the YouTube link to this appearance by Teddy Thompson (son of Richard and Linda Thompson) on Letterman a month ago.
What a treat to see music like this on mainstream TV. Tasteful steel by Greg Leisz (I think), and twin fiddles (plus viola and cello)!

It is indeed a beautiful song and it is now available on WalMart--I have downloaded one. I really like the violns with the viola.

Teddy was also on Conan a couple of nights before Letterman. On Conan he played a kind of rockabilly grove song, and had the string quartet, stand up bass, drums, and had Jim Campolongo on tele. It was very cool.

If you've ever heard of Richard and Linda Thompson, he's one of their combined productions. So he comes from a musical lineage, and even produced his mom's last album.
He was also part of Rosanne Cash's band till last year, then got his own record deal. |

Thanjs for posting this. I saw that show and loved the performance. I didn't know he was the son of Richard and Linda. Richard Thompson has always been one of my favorite song writers and I remember trying to wear out the album of Richard and Linda "Looking for the Bright Lights Tonight". |

Fantastic! I loved it.
But I find it interesting that Brint titles the thread "Traditional Country..." But isn't it really sort of a surpy 70's country kind of sound. Isn't "twin fiddles, viola, and cello" with written notes on music stands in front of them called a "string section?"
But then this is 2007 so I guess the 70's sound qualifies as traditional, as does a 60's Ray Price, and Bob Wills, and etc. etc. Everythng's relative. _________________ Bill Cunningham

I like this a lot. His voice kinda reminds me of a cross between Chris Isaak and Dwight. Time will tell if this kind of thing really makes it into the mainstream, but there's lots of good music out there bangin' on the door.
I don't care what anybody calls it - it sure sounds more country than most of what I hear on so-called country radio these days. The string section work is very, very nice, to my tastes. Of course, one of my favorites for many years have been Norman and Nancy Blake, with Nancy's cello providing beautiful counterpoint to Norman's guitar work. |

Reminded me a bit of Lyle Lovett (who also at one point I believe toured with just himself and a cello player). And Greg Leisz as unobtrusively brilliant as ever. Nice clip.

I was being a little facetious with my "twin fiddles etc." description--but only partly. Of course the instrumentation is actually a string quartet, but a lot of what they play on this song sounds like what the fiddles in, for example, the Texas Playboys would play on a song like this. (Though they probably wouldn't have had music on stands!) |

I saw the show and was floored at the simplicity, and the KISS system of old being applied... Now thats a song I would like to do with that type of setting eh Doug? The fact he made it to to letterman and Conan shows great promotion. The secrets out and for those that scream for Country buying the CD would help to get more exposed... |
