Been eavesdropping on you all for a while so I decided to sign up. Wanted to say a quick hello. Been playing rock, folk and blues guitar for 30 some years as an amateur (but a really hard working passionate one). Started playing lap steel about two years ago, first on a Chandler, than an Industrial Guitar Dan Walsh frying pan model (love them both, especially the latter). I am currently waiting for the completion of a Lazy River Weissenborn. Mostly play in E and D, starting to mess around in the dobro G tuning. I wanted to publicly thank Brad Bechtel for the amazing web site, it has been a valuable resource on artists as well as instrument makers (all 3 of my guitars I learned about there). I am a Hopp Wilson fanatic now thanks to Brad. Also wanted to thank Steinar for his thoughtful suggestions and guidance when I contacted him while considering purchasing the Lazy River guitar.
First question -- any recommendations for acoustic strings for my soon to be completed Weissenborn style guitar? I plan to use D tuning. If the answer is Newtone, anyone know a good resource for them on line in the USA?

Hi Arthur, and welcome to the club. I'm sure you already know (from your eavesdropping) how great this forum is. I'm a newbie to the steel, as well as the guitar, so I can't be any help to you on the question of strings, but I'm sure somebody'll be along soon to give you good ideas about them.
Anyway, howdy!

Hi Arthur, good to see you hear!
I use Newtone 'Aloha' strings myself, but realize they're hard to get in the US (I believe "12th Fret" in Canada has them).
If you decide to buy Pearce string (Bob's link) then make sure you don't buy the "heavy" set (3150H "D" Tuning Heavy), but the other open-D set (3160L "D" Tuning).

Welcome Art to the wonderful world of non-pedal steel on the Forum.

I hope you will also venture into the world of old style Hawaiian music with your acoustic steel guitar.
I'll see you around.
Aloha,
Don |

Feel welcome already. I live in Cherry Hill, a bit of a distance from lovely Metuchen, which I know well from my college days at Rutgers in New Brunswick. I went to the Big Island and Kauai Summer before last, came back with some steel discs, haven't tried to play in that style much yet, but I am sure I'll be drifting that way eventually. Haven't tried any 6th tunings yet which I understand are the most conducive to the Islands sound. |

Hi from one newbie to another. Just joined up today.
My story sounds a lot like yours, Arthur
I've played regular guitar for over 30 years with lots of slide guitar thrown in. Just this last year picked up a 56 Supro body which I restored (not original, sorry ) and spent the summer playing BBQ's with a folkie pal. Felt like I was floundering (thought the general public kept telling me how good it sounded... go figure) so decided to take some lessons (Hi, Tim!) Not sounding much better, yet... the cats run away and hide every time I practice "Sleepwalk"... Damn, the thumpick takes a little getting used to...
Anyway, nice to be here! |
