I did it Robbie for the EHarp tuning
a few years ago. It's a 10 string tuning
for those not familiar.
I play it as a solo and still have the MP3
and ClicTab.

She's on my verboten list as it's been made too loungy but, Black Oprheus, another great Brazilian tune works very nicely. Especially if you work out a solo style where you work in the bossa comping feel in to it.

Hi Robbie,

I worked it out in 6-string C6 (CEGACE) by "reading" it (very, very slowly) from the sheet music on the Fake Book CD. It lays very nicely in F.

Sorry, but I don't write tab. Actually, I don't read much tab any more, as I have found that I learn a lot more by reading the melody line and chord charts from a fake book and figuring how to find the melody and harmony on the steel. Every time I learn a tune that way I learn more about the C6 neck. It's really paying off--one of those musical breakthroughs.

"A Day in the Life of Fool" in B-flat is pretty easy on the C6 neck too.

Yeah, a lot of people turn their noses up at "Ipanema," but if it wasn't a great tune it probably wouldn't have been played to death. Besides, it's an excellent introduction to playing bossa novas on the steel.

OOPS I just realized.. I'm in the wrong department ..Just pretend you didn't hear the 4 pedals in use on a fender 1000. The Girl could have inspired me to use a knee lever or two!!!, ..I simply LOVE the D9b5 chord in it ..on the word "Sea" and the C9b5 on the word "Me"..

Everything you play sounds great, Basil, and don't worry about being in the wrong category, this whole thread is in the wrong category... (there's one for tab)

Ipanema is only a cliche if you allow it to be so. It's a classic bossa with wondeful, unique chord changes. Baz, your playing is gorgeous ... lovely full tone and great conception! Baz is unafraid to just let the guitar sing a beautiful melody but also takes a cool improv solo when called for.

Folks should check out Baz's CDs "Live At the Castaways" for some great soloing on mostly Hawaiian material.

I just heard Mike Ihde play it on his CD called "A Different Slant", and to simply say I was impressed, would be an understatement.

Mike is a marvelous musician, and an incredible player. I highly recommend his CD to everyone who loves steel guitar. He even has tracks of the CD available as well as very well laid out tab.

This CD is going to remain on my "play list".

WOW.....What a response! Thanks guys. I'm gonna' give Mike Ihde's version a try. I've been curious about the leavitt tuning anyway. I just found an excuse to take that leap. I don't agree that this song is old hat or cliche'. I love the sound of this tune on the steel guitar. Bas, your version sounds great! Herb Remington recorded a beautiful version of this number on his "Steeling Memories" disc a few years ago. Check it out.

Baz,
My wife overheard you playing "Girl From Impanema" she came in and said that was such beautiful steel guitar playing. That is something coming from my wife who normally has to be really, really be impressed to say something like that. So she was. I thought so too.

Enjoyed Kay's playing as well.

Kay if you are out there talk a little about how you do your backups.

Aloha,
Don

Both are great!
Kay's single string approach sort of emulates
a singer and the expression is right on.
Thanks fellas.

Love every version guys. I'd sure like to find this one in C6 and Kay that backup was awesome, "is it live or is it Memorex"?
