Even though I did say that, overall, I think learning by ear is good. One aspect of steel that's real tough to master without some assistance (for me anyway) is speed picking and /or chicken picking techniques.

I'd like stuff in the Byrd C6th 8 sting tuning

Anyone have any good source of materials I can purchase to assist me in developing this technique?

Well .... chicken pickin' is traditionally a telecaster-based standard guitar sound that's - at least in my mind - antithetical to the C6th, Jerry Byrd sound. CP is done by a combination of muting and popping the strings against the guitar fingerboard. Junior Brown comes closest to that sound on lap steel on a cut called 'Peelin' Taters'. If you want to see what you can do on C6th, here's some standad guitar licks and info to get you started ...

Forumite Doung Beaumier has some speed picking material. Speed picking usually tries to take advantage of the layout of the E9th pedal steel tuning to play fast scales with minimal movement. If you want speed on lap steel, listen closely to Tom Morell (especially, 'I can't give you anything but love') and investigate pick blocking. Jerry Byrd's diatonic tuning can give you some harp-like cascading scales that are pretty cool. It's a bit like C6th customized with racing components.
