It doesn't seem like thirty years. Here's one of my favourites:

He is also one of my favorites from that era. I first saw Elvis at the Airman's club on Keesler AFB (Biloxi, Miss) in 1955, which was before he was known worldwide or even all over the US. I later saw him again in Frankfurt Germany at the "King Bar", while I was stationed in Germany in the Air Force.

I've also been to Graceland several times. I'm always amazed by all the writings on the wall outside Graceland. I've also been to the Sun Records building (now a tourist trap) once.

Jack,
On CBC radio today they had a call-in show, with people telling Elvis stories.
One woman called in to say at the time her father was with the services and posted in Biloxi, where Elvis was to make an appearance. She was tremendously excited about going.
As the crowd gathered, there was an unfortunate happening, as someone fainted... not unusual at an Elvis appearance. The hook was, the person that fainted from excitement was the security guard ! haha
The appearance was cancelled, and she went away disappointed but armed with a funny story.
Apparently the appearance was rescheduled, but she couldn't make it. Maybe that was the show.

John, I doubt that was the same show. He wasn't as famous in 1955 when he came to the Airman's Club and he didn't make any public appearances in Biloxi first. At the time, sort how most of us that play gigs do, no P.R., just travel to the gig - setup and then do the show.

Here are a couple pictures I just found. They were taken in 2003 on the way home from the ISGC in St Louis. Fellow Steeler and forumite, Don Sulesky, was riding with us and we stopped in Memphis on the way back to Florida.

The first one is the Sun Studio's with me in front.

This one is Don Sulesky and me in front to the gate to Graceland. I'm the one with the "shades".

Not that I was an Elvis fan, but I remember that day vividly. I was an 19 year old PFC stationed at USMC 29 Palms, CA. It rained so hard and flooded that day that they closed the base. Just as I was driving through the gate in 12 inches of water to go to my house, I heard an annoucement on the radio that Elvis had been found dead.

I was living in Spokane when I heard the news on the radio. Later that day I went to the burger stand and I asked the car hop if she had heard that Elvis had died. She said, "Oh no, my mother will be so upset." I thought, "Your MOTHER!" I forgot how old I was. I always thought I would go to Tahoe or Vegas in the future and Elvis would come out with a full head of silver hair, lean on a cane, and gasp out a toothless version of Hound Dog, and all of us old ladies would increase our oxygen.
A friend of mine went with his family to Vegas. He was given the choice of seeing Elvis or seeing Evil Kinevil jump the fountains at Caesar's Palace. Being a guy, he chose Evil. He said he landed about 6 feet in front of him. I am thinking maybe that might have been just a wee bit more exciting than Elvis.
