It's time to change strings on my beautiful Bearcreek "Weissenborn Style" guitar. Could someone suggest string options. I play in low bass G. Also, any strings or sizes I should avoid. Thanks in advance. Richard.

John Pearse makes a very good set of strings. Check out the gauges as listed on the Just Strings web site.

Just measure the diameter of the original strings on the guitar. Try to match the type - bronze, nickel, bright bronze, etc.

Do NOT just put a set of resphonic strings on the Weissenborn. You could cause serious damage to the body and/or neck of the guitar.

Thanx,
Jim

You might try Newtone Aloha strings. That's what I currently have on my Bear Creek. I found them overly twangy at first but they mellowed beautifully and have lasted longer than any other brand I've tried. Here's one dealer ..,

Another vote for the Newtone Aloha strings from me.

If you want to try the Pearse strings, just make sure you don't buy the "open-D" Weissenborn set with the .035 third string,- that's an insane gauge for a string tuned to F# or G, and can damage your guitar.

Remember to tune up before cutting them. If you cut them while they're loose they may unwind,- not a lot, but enough to make the bass strings lose tone and flexibility. I know this has happened to a couple of players, and there is a warning about it on the string package. But who reads warnings nowadays?

I use D'Addario EJ18 phosphor bronze / heavy
.014-.059 on my weissenborns, tricone and dobro, good price and great tone.

Steinar's right about the Pearce strings (017-062), by the time there up to pitch the top on the poor weissenborn is about ready to lift.

I just placed an order with Newtone strings in the UK, You can order direct. The pricing is very good on baritone string, it will be interesting to see how long it takes to receive them. I don't get on well with the 12th fret.
