Here's a couple of videos with my new band "Local Zoo", from our 2nd gig about a month ago. It's basically an unpretentious 'feelgood' combo, and the first time in 20 years I've had the feeling of playing in a "real band" - almost everything else has been 'projects' or as a hired gun.
It's all-acoustic, which is a first for me too, feels great not having to haul tons of decibels around to gigs and rehearsals...

The video quality could have been better, but the sound is pretty good, hope you enjoy it! Smile

The Nearness Of You (James Taylor)

Walkin' My Baby Back Home (Ahlert/Turk)

For some of our more "serious" material ("Brooklyn Bridge" and "Melancholy Blue" are originals), check out our MySpace site: http://www.myspace.com/localzooband

Thanks guys!

Quote:

Espen Larsen; guitar, vocal, founding father of the band - Marianne Rodvelt Asser; vocal, violin and good looks - Dag Henriksen; bass and punchlines

It all started when Espen, a great James Taylor interpretor, was asked to do a "Taylor gig" some months ago - we'd talked about doing something acoustic for a couple of years without getting around to it, so he asked me if I wanted to join him for the gig, recruited Marianne and Dag, and before we knew it we were a "band".........

congratulations Steinar, the great thing about persevering with the lap is that you have your own 'space' in which to explore, with that kind of lineup you could develop lots of new exciting textures ,which I know your interested in, keep it up, sounds great.

Oh yeah, definitely. Especially the ballads we do are great for exploring that stuff, this lineup create some wide open spaces that gives me plenty of room for 'alternative' textures. There are some examples of that in "Medley" and also "Brooklyn Bridge" on our MySpace site.

And I never thought I should say this - I love playing without a drummer/percussionist...... Smile After this gig several of the local drummers lined up for the percussion spot, but nope, we won't have it. The chemistry is perfect now..

I think you have been wanting to be in a band, if I remember. you have a terrific combination and what appears to be good and growing chemistry. that is very cool and I am happy for you all. I saw a little percussion going with your right hand. so don't tell us you are fine without Wink
what a great combination of instruments. talent oozing.
strange name however.to be sure, there is a good humour
story behind it.
gosh, I am feeling proud for you.

Well, I said I was happy playing without a percussionist, that leaves more percussion work to me, hehe.. Very Happy

That's what I love most about playing with the other guys doing our hapa-haole Hawaiian stuff. Plus, on acoustic instruments, and without a drummer, you can never get 'too' loud. I think this music lives best at living room volumes with no mics at all. It sounds like you've captured that intimate vibe VERY well. Smile

Really, really nice feeling/playing, Steinar (all of you). With all the heaviness going on in the world, we need more of this kind of lightheartedness!

Where was this show? The setting is very warm and friendly feeling, and reminds me of some of the resort places I used to go to in summer in Door County, Wisconsin. Sweet...

Thanks a lot guys! Smile

Brad - we played our fourth gig tonight, so I think we may need some more 'warm-up' gigs before we set out to conquer the world..... Wink

Todd - that's a really special place here in our hometown, an outdoor venue surrounded by buildings from the 18th century. Very intimate and a great place to play, people actually come for the music and not just for the booze..

Here's a nice photo of it:

Great Steinar! Both your incredibly sweet playing and the way the band sounds as a unit.

Shocked I've heard about places like that but I didn't know they really existed until now! Wink

Looks like the summer is nice up there too!

Steinar, what a neat area to play music, tell us more...what kind of PA are you using, do you mix yourself or is there a FOH mix. It throws a whole new light on the song clips knowing that it is an outside venue, at first I thought it was a nice stage with a back drop...very neat place...Terry V.

Terry, there's not much more to say really, the promoters rent the PA with soundman from a local company. I don't recall the specifications of the PA, but it's a difficult place to get a good sound for several reasons - the sound changes dramatically from soundcheck to gig, more than in most regular indoor venues, and the stage is hollow so even with this acoustic lineup we had some problems with booming bass frequencies on stage..
