Howdy yall. Im a service member, living in Germany . Been playing guitar for about 12 years, but have recently fallen in love with the pedal/lap steel sound. Im buying a pedal and a lap steel from members here, and already have a beginner lap steel from Chandler...So I was wonderin' what are the common tunings for "Country" style lap steel and what is a good reference book or website to learn these tunings and licks?
Im glad to have found this place. Looks to be a great site..Thanks yall..

Welcome, good to see ya! The site I use for tunings is http://rickalexander.com/BigSteel/Tunings.html. The Chandler lap steels are highly undervalued, I think they sound great. You are not too terribly far away from some European Forum brothers, and you'll get lots of information here. Personally I recommend C6 to start and the Cindy Cashdollar DVD's for instruction. I also use open D for David Lindley stuff; Lots of fun and the El Rayo Ex CD's are fun to play along with. Have fun at it!

Guten Morgen, Teddy. Welcome to the SGF. I am a newbie also and the members here have been great. Like Keith says, the Chandler Steel has a great sound and I believe it will take you along way. I started with Cindy Cashdollar's Western Swing, a two set DVD by Homespun. I got in on eBay #7341754570 for $30. She uses C6 tuning. It is as good of start as any.

Hello again, TR.
Good to hear from you. I hope you'll be taking that trip South soon.

Just curious about what brand of pedal steel you're looking at. (The Chandler is a beautiful gui.) The Carter Starter has worked out great for me, small and lightweight; but I'm betting you're a big guy and wouldn't be able to step on a pedal without mashing all three--fairly compact.

Keep us posted on your journey.

and this is the lap http://steelguitarforum.com/Forum9/HTML/001735.html

I cant wait to go down south. Wife and I just bought some farmland there(NC) from my Granddaddy, and itll be a nice homestead. It aint to far from the city, so I can go in and gig.

Excellent choices, I think. Pretty Electro.

Your new spot sounds like heaven. I'm sure you're champing at the bit to take a shovel to it and move some real earth.

Lord, am I Charlie.

Miss waking up to roosters, eating boil peanuts, co-cola with packs of salted peanuts poured in, moon pies, and collard greens and fatback...Old Country music, tobbaco fields and rebel flags!

Makes my heart ache!
