I'd like to build a lap steel, and would like to get some opinions about tone wood for such a project. Thanks in advance..

There are lots of great tonewoods out there. It really depends on what you want it to sound and look like.
Is this going to be a solid body or acoustic?

....it'll be a simple design patterned after a 8 string National New Yorker, because I have an extra New Yorker case. Probably won't even have a volume control. Probably put the Lollar Stringmaster pup duo in, so it would have a blend pot.

With those pickups, I'd probably go with a nice light ash / swamp ash.

You have a couple good hardwood dealers in the Portland area.
Check out Gilmer, they have lots of cool woods and normaly have swamp ash.

Thanks for the info and opinions, Tom. And it' looks like you're doing a nice job yourself! I'm suprised I haven't found Gilmer, but I've only been in Portland for about 1 year. Do you know of any exotic wood source down in New Mexico? It appears that the wife and I will be heading there shortly.... Again, thanks for the info!!

Thanks Stephen, I can't play them worth a dam, but I sure have fun building them.

I don't know of any New Mexico shops, but I'm sure there is something around.
A good source of info is to check with a local custom cabinet shop, they will know all the local wood dealers.

Have fun with the build and I look forward to seeing it when its done Smile
