The New York Times has a brief article about fiction writer Haruki Murakami and how his love/obsession for jazz music has informed and influenced his style as a writer:
Jazz Messenger
I always thought the two processes to be intimately related. I used to write a lot of fiction but finally decided I only had time to get better at one or the other, and re-chose music (for now at least, hold on ears & fingers). A relatively large percentage of professional fiction writers play music as a hobby, it's almost like choosing the two professions with the least possible chance of commercial success and seeing which one sticks to the wall... many musicians are great & creative liars, too.... |
