Was this done using a Don Helms type tuning or on a
C6th neck? I don't seem to be able to come close to that sound Crying or Very sad on an E9th tuning.

I think that's Greg Leisz on lap steel.
Sorry, but I don't know what tuning he's using on that cut.
I don't have the album with me right now to hear it, I'll guess that it is some kind of 6th tuning.

Gary, I worked with Greg this morning and he told me it was an old Fender Champ 6 string lap steel - with a Tele pickup - tuned to C6. I don't quite remember what he said the amp was, though....it might have been a Deluxe.

Gary,

Flatten your E strings with your knee lever and playing strings 4 thru 10 (excluding the 9th string). Or press pedals a and b and play the same strings listed above.
