I received a good question today.
Quote: |
Just wondering if anyone has ever attempted to play "Night Life" on a lap steel. I'd like to do it on an 8 string. This is one of my all time favorite songs. Tuning?
|
I haven't tried the song myself, but listening to it, I think there would be a lot of slanting and jumping around the neck to do it justice.
What do you think? _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

I worked out a version of it on 8 string C6. No slants. I don't really ever tab anything out so I can't fully explain it here, but I use mostly the same positions that I'd used on the C6 pedal steel version. It's a great tune what ever it's played on. |

It can be done easily on the Joaquin Murphey C6/A9 complete with all the chords. You could also get to it almost as easily on the Junior Brown C13 or Tom Morrell's E13. You need at least one tritone in there somewhere. |

Reece and Bobbe do a smokin' version of "Night Life" on the "Superslide Slide Off" DVD. Reece plays his single 12 and Bobbe plays a double 8 (straight C6 i believe).
The DVD is available here on the forum, but is showing "Temporarily Out of Stock".

No, I play all the "Night Life" chords without slants, but do not hesitate to use any method possible to get the correct harmonies anywhere on any song. Slants are not to be avoided if they are necessary, just not necessary on this song, with eight strings. I do it with four string chords, the eight string neck is not a disadvantage at all on this tune.

Hey Mike from N. Mexico. Yep I've been called Country Dave for a good 35 years or so. I've been called other things I can't say on the Forum, too. Which Walter are you referring to? |

Bobbe, are there more copies of the 'Super Slide Off' on the way? I don't see it in b0b's store or your website either. |

Sorry Bobbe. I guess I was thinking about a different song. I edited my last post so as not to confuse anyone. |
