Since getting into steel guitar, basically my D8, I have found that I can get two "completely" different tones from each neck. This of course is partly due to my steel having three separate controls for each neck.

I have read many posts in here of people preferring a 22 ½’ over the 24 ¾ neck. As a rule, and after almost a year of experimenting and tinkering with the tone, bass and volume on the steel and setting the amp to my liking, I have found that the second neck on my steel can be set to give a beautiful mellow and much deeper resonating tone than the 22½ neck.

As a rule I play Hawaiian music on the 22 ½ neck because of the higher pitch but, move to the second neck (24¾”) when I play other melodies that, I feel, sound much better when played with the deeper pedal steel tone. I also usually tune according to what I am going to be playing; however, mostly in C6 with “G” on top.

Does anyone else set use their second neck for specific types of music and tunes or just for the different tunings?

I don't think I have ever seen a double neck with two different lengths. What type of steel do you play? The length is probably what is making the difference. The 24" will almost always sound more mellow.
